Reception have re-organised their mornings and we now start with a ‘hands on’ session. When we first come into the classroom we can choose from a variety of activities, including using our lovely new water tray, play-dough and painting easel. These activities are helping to build up our fine motor skills, as well as being really good fun!

Fun didn’t stop in the pre-prep when the snow arrived in abundance last week! We got all wrapped up and headed off to explore the grounds to see what our other school friends had produced. We were amazed at the size of the snow forts that the main school children had made and were very excited to see Year 3 making snowmen up on the field behind the swimming pool!

How to Purchase Second-hand Uniform
The school stocks a supply of second-hand uniform which has been kindly donated by parents.

A separate list may be found under the Second-hand Uniform heading, which gives details of the dates when the uniform 'shop' is open to parents. This is usually the first Tuesday of each month. The shop is run by Mrs Justine Jones, who is a Yarlet parent and member of the Fund Raising Committee.

However, if parents need to purchase items at another time, please contact the school to make an appointment with Matron, Mrs Swift, who would be pleased to help.

It is also possible to check availability of items by completing an order form, which can also be found on the school's website, under the Second-hand Uniform heading. Copies of the form are also available from Pre-Prep and from the Study.

Toddlers from Yarlet Nursery have taken part in a Big Toddle and raised over £350 for the Dr Barnardo's charity.

This sponsored fancy dress walk and fun exercise session has enabled Yarlet boys and girls aged 2 and 3 to help vulnerable and disadvantaged under 5's in projects throughout the UK.

The children thoroughly enjoyed this worthwhile energetic event and we are all extremely pleased with the amount raised.

Yarlet House Garden Open Afternoon - Friday 18th June 2010

As part of the National Garden Scheme, Yarlet Governor, Mr Nick Tarling, is once again opening to the public the gardens of Yarlet House on Friday 18th June, 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm. In addition, Yarlet's art room will be open, exhibiting fine examples of pupils' work.

Yarlet parents and friends are warmly invited to come and visit the garden. Admission is £3 for adults, children free of charge, and proceeds are being split between the National Garden Scheme (which, in the last 10 years, has donated £25m to charity) and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust.

Form 4 Storm Stafford Castle

Form 4 were transported to the Norman era during their trip to Stafford Castle.

Dressed as Lord Stafford's army, they learnt all about Norman castles and life during this period, especially events of 1066. They then split into Saxons and Normans and took part in a mock Battle of Hastings. The Saxons stood strong in their shield wall whilst the Norman cavalry charged up our pretend Senlac Hill!

An impressive performance in battle led to Oscar being knighted and becoming known as 'Sir Oscar'!

A particularly enjoyable part of the day was learning about weaponry and armour and the class were lucky to be able to try on chain mail and helmets and even handle some of the replica weapons!

There was just time to make Norman coins and do some brass rubbing before heading off home.

THE YARLET GAMES EMPORIUM

Saturday 5th of December marked the return of the annual Christmas Fayre and for the first time the senior boys presented a gaming emporium. Now this was no Xbox shootout or Wii fitness romp, this was something much more special. All the games were made during DT classes by the boys and ranged from a Safari Hunt to George the Giraffe Hoopla. The boys also produced advertising posters and even manned the games encouraging spectators to join in the fun. And with a whopping £70 raised it just goes to show that traditional games are still a winner with the children.

Form 3 took another step back in time on 22nd June when we visited Tatton Park to meet Tatta and Freya, the only Anglo-Saxon survivors of a brutal Viking attack.

Tatta and Freya taught us a lot about the Anglo-Saxon way of life; we fetched water, ground flour and made breadcakes and lucky charms.

After a 21st century packed lunch, we set off to find a suitable site for a new shelter. Along the way we discovered how to track and trap a deer and we even found some black bear hair!

We made the framework and fire for a new settlement and then looked for meat on the journey home. Sadly, Tatta couldn't find any and his trick of pretending Oscar was a dead deer did not impress Freya! We held a Wittan and Oscar and Tea were declared the new leaders.

We zoomed back up-to-date with an ice-cream and a trip to the adventure playground to round off the day. What a fantastic trip - and Form 3 were a real credit to Yarlet!

Form 6 Learn About Fire Safety

The Fire Service (Pat and Andy) came on Monday 22nd February to talk to Year 6 about fire safety and the importance of smoke alarms. I hope you all have them fitted in your homes!

The children enjoyed a presentation on the work done by the fire service and were able to thoroughly investigate the fire engine.

Nick Hancock Climbs Kilimanjaro in support of The Donna Louise Trust

On 17th May I’m going to climb/walk/clamber up Kilimanjaro for a local children’s hospice, The Donna Louise Trust’s ‘Treetops’. This is a charity that Yarlet is supporting during this academic year and one which is particularly close to my heart, as a young chum of mine, William (3), is currently in and out of their premises while awaiting a heart transplant.

IT'S A MASTERPIECE

As part of our PSE (Personal, social and emotional) area of learning the Nursery ‘doodles’ have joined together to create a colourful ‘masterpiece’. We emphasised how lucky we are to have friends and how we can help each other. We were very proud of the result which is displayed in Nursery for all to see!

YARLET UNDER 13S V FOREMARKE - WON 18 - 11

What a great afternoon the U13 girls had!

We were first into bat and were shocked at the high standard of fielding on display. But gradually our confidence was restored with the fantastic hits of Olivia, Jamie and Molly, not to mention the half rounders piling on from the rest of the team. Our score of 8 seemed amazing considering the incredible fielding and bowling.

Enter team one who had some great hits, but with our disciplined fielding only 7 rounders were scored. With the score just 8 - 7 to us we had to put on a real display of our best batting and we did! Olivia, Leona, Abi and Molly scored some fantastic whole rounders and almost everyone else scored at least one half rounder. We now had a great total of 18. But would that be enough?

Enter team two who were the best fielders and looked like they would be the best batters too. What they hadn't counted on was our determination to win.

With Molly's great bowling and Hattie's alert backstopping they couldn't get going. We were catching them...

Forms 1 and 2 had a fantastic trip to Ainsdale beach on 23rd June. The weather was perfect, the beach was beautiful and the children on good form. Great fun was had by all!
