Welcome to the Yarlet Music Academy Although it has always been one of Yarlet’s greatest strengths, the launch of the Music Academy in September 2010 has taken music to new heights. With the new Head of the Music Academy, Sarah Broder, now in place we have seen a dramatic increase in the uptake of instrumental tuition, with 2/3 of our pupils now learning an instrument. The value of learning a musical instrument goes much further than merely acquiring technical skills; self-discipline is needed to practise between lessons, and self-confidence, general awareness and a sense of achievement can also be derived from individual music lessons. Each week a team of visiting teachers provide tuition on all orchestral instruments, singing, piano, electric guitar, classical guitar and percussion. Pupils are also actively encouraged to join ensemble groups and to perform in regular concerts and recitals. All pupils learning an instrumental are given the opportunity to prepare for examinations, many progress to a high levels, reaching grade 5 and above in some cases and winning music exhibitions or scholarships to their senior schools. Altogether, it is difficult to imagine that a school could offer more breadth of opportunity for individual or group music making and, certainly, our prime objective is to help young people to enjoy their music making to the full. |
