After a successful start to the season, the 1st XI continued in fine style with a string of victories.
Terra Nova were beaten 5 – 3. We were rather shocked to be 1-2 down at half time, but we rallied in the second half and deserved the victory. Next came The Ryleys. Playing against a strong wind, it was 1-1 at the interval, but the second half wind helped us to run out convincing 6-1 winners. Birchfield away was next on the fixture list and we knew it would be a difficult game. The boys were really up for it, and they did indeed have a real fight on their hands, but we came out on top 5-4. Shrewsbury U14C were our next opponents at home, and we dominated this game, winning 6-0. It could easily have been more. With a small squad, we could not afford injury or illness, but then came the bad news that Tom Osborne had appendicitis. He would be missed, and so it proved against a good Prestfelde team who beat us 0-3 on our own pitch. Still, this has been an exciting team to watch, and we have enjoyed our most successful season for many years. There were some excellent goals, and Edward Hall was the season’s top scorer (by a considerable margin). Harry Fernyhough was outstanding at the heart of the defence. Tom Osborne and Joshua Malyon bossed the midfield in most games, and Josh was a great captain, always leading by example. |
