Mums –v- Daughters Netball Match – Part One Wednesday 3 March 2010
Match report from Yarlet Correspondent, Christopher Lindop
Wednesday afternoon saw the “Mighty Mums” come up against a strong U13 netball team. The eagerly anticipated tip-off came at 2.30 pm in cold conditions. Despite the weather, Mrs Foster was not to be put off and showed commendable commitment by being the only mum to bear legs and wear shorts. From the Centre pass, the girls attacked quickly and Leona was on hand to finish a lovely team move. Cue panic amongst the mums, was this to be a thrashing? Following this frantic start, the rest of the quarter was a more tentative affair with Mrs Brandon dominating at the back, despite not knowing the rules! Eventually, the mums equalised through Mrs Harrison, her first shot of the game! The first quarter ended 1 – 1. Unfortunately, Mrs Jones found the going tough and showed a distinct lack of stamina and had to have a lie down for the second quarter! The girls came out fighting and consequently opened up a 2 goal lead through some excellent attacking play. Not to be down hearted, the mums fought back, inspired by Mrs Millington, who was a predator in front of goal, showing a clinical side to her game. The platform for this revival came from Mrs Glassey and Mrs Raybould, showing impressive distribution skills. Half-time, 6 – 4. Game on!

The Drama Continues …! Match report from Mrs Millington
Third quarter and the girls really needed to stop the mums’ excellent passes and to take control of the game. Mrs Brandon was still obstructing the shooters and, at one point, she not only pushed into Olivia, she even started to rock the post! At that moment, there was no other option for the umpire, other than to send her off, while Olivia took and scored from a free shot.
Meanwhile, Mrs Harrison was linking arms with
Mrs Raybould, however, was calmly darting into the circle and scoring one great shot after another, ably assisted by the determined and aggressive Mrs Foster. Girls 4, Mums 10.
In the last quarter, the girls completely re-organised their team and, with Hattie as Centre and Jessica as Wing Attack, the ball zoom down the court into the safe hands of shooters, Leona and Olivia. Abi and Jamie started to jump for every ball, heading for the Circle, but the combination of passing from Mrs Glassey, whose ‘chicken roll’ was a sight to behold, to Mrs Harrison, to Mrs Millington, proved too much and the score continued to increase, with slick shooting associated with ‘ladies of a certain age’.
Final score – Mums 12, Girls 8.
Everyone had had a great time and there had been a lot of giggles and, luckily, no sprains or pulled muscles. So, sorry girls, better luck next time, when you play the mums in rounders! |
