Extracurricular activities at Yarlet Print E-mail

Along with sport, the Yarlet curriculum extends beyond the classroom to provide what we hope is the best all-round education for our pupils. We do have high expectations of all our children and, wherever their individual talents lie, we provide every opportunity for them to shine. Here is how we complete the educational picture:

Art & Design

A purpose-built art room, with excellent facilities, provides a perfect environment to develop creative skills, including art, design, ceramics, printing and photography.  As can be seen from a visit to the art room, standards in all areas are high and have been consistently so for a number of years, resulting in a significant number of scholarship awards to senior schools, of which we are very proud.  From Year 1 (age 5+), pupils are introduced to art and design technology, having use of this superb facility.

Wherever you are at Yarlet, you can usually hear the sounds of music - whether a class music lesson, singing, individual instrumental tuition, ensemble practices, choir practices or rehearsals for concerts.  We endeavour to inspire pupils to develop their musical interests and visits from accomplished and internationally acclaimed musicians also help to whet their musical appetites.

Pre-Prep pupils, from Year 1 (5+), may learn the recorder (often as a preliminary to learning the flute at a later stage) and also the piano and violin.

On joining Main School at the age of 7+, pupils are open to a much wider variety of instrumental choice, which increases as they become physically able to handle larger instruments, and work together as they participate in ensembles and concerts.

In 2004, Yarlet launched a new Music Scholarship, ‘The Young Musician of the Year', which pays for instrumental lessons for a young, talented musician aged 11+.

Stars are born from the age of 2 at Yarlet, when they participate in Harvest Festivals and Nativity plays, which are held in our own chapel, to delight parents and friends.  In the Main School, Form 3 rehearse each summer for their own in-house play, which takes place just before the end of term.

Furthermore, each year, in either the spring or summer term, the major drama production of the year is held and involves every Main School pupil. As rehearsals progress, it is marvellous to see our boys and girls develop self-confidence, stage presence and, of course, their ability to act, sing and dance.  With all hands on deck, there's never a stage ‘fright' in sight!

Ballet & Dance

It is always a joy to watch the Yarlet ballerinas who, from the age of 3, transform into fairy princesses, learn all about good toes and naughty toes and practise perfect skips, with heads held high and wands in hand.  Poise, grace and elegance become more apparent as our young ballerinas develop their skills, following the syllabus of the Royal Academy of Dancing.

Activities

Activities provide our boys and girls with a further opportunity to express themselves outside the formal context of the classroom.  By taking part in club activities, such as French Culture, Drama, Dance, Table Tennis, ICT, Basketball and Chess, pupils not only develop additional skills, but also have the chance to relate to teachers in a more relaxed and informal way, further developing the special teacher-pupil relationship which characterises Yarlet life.
